2-Ply Cotton vs Single-Ply T-Shirts: What's the Difference?

But what does it actually mean?
And does 2-ply cotton automatically make a T-shirt better?
The short answer is more nuanced than simply saying 2-ply is better than single-ply.
Ply describes how yarns are constructed. Understanding that distinction helps you make a more informed decision when comparing T-shirts.
Let's break it down.
What Is 2-Ply Cotton?
In simple terms, a 2-ply yarn is made by twisting two yarn strands together to create a single yarn.
A single-ply yarn uses one strand.
The difference is in the yarn construction — not simply in the number of layers of fabric in the finished T-shirt.
That distinction is important because 2-ply does not mean "two layers of T-shirt."
Single-Ply vs 2-Ply: The Basic Difference
With single-ply yarn, one strand forms the yarn used to construct the fabric.
With 2-ply yarn, two strands are twisted together.
Depending on the yarn specifications and manufacturing process, 2-ply construction can contribute to a more stable and substantial yarn.
